Generally speaking, it doesn't matter where you were married, however it does matter in which state you or your wife are currently a resident.

You and/ or your spouse would need to be a resident of California in order to file for divorce. Some people wish to file before they have established residency so they may have an option to file for a legal separation which requires less time in the state. Other factors to consider are whether there is property or children in another state. The attorney can advise as to what legal options are preferable.
